Metaphysics Is Computer Science
It’s not all that mysterious and elusive.
Chances are, you are reading this essay through a computer. The internet depends upon computers. Databases, search engines, artificial intelligence, banking systems, medical systems, business software, video games, and nearly every modern institution depend upon computing.
Nobody looks at computer science and thinks it is mystical. Nobody says computer science is spiritual.
We trust it because it works.
But what exactly is computer science doing that makes it so powerful? It is not the study of machines. It is the study of information, structures, relationships, algorithms, and the rules by which systems transform inputs into outputs. It allows us to identify patterns that are not themselves pieces of data. It allows us to reason about relationships between things, even when those relationships cannot themselves be picked up and held.
That distinction is fundamental.
Data is like the material. Structure is the relational organization of that material.
A database contains information. But the database is not simply the information inside it. A schema organizes that information. It determines what belongs where, how different pieces of information relate to one another, what relationships are permitted, and how the information can be retrieved and interpreted.
An empty database can therefore be real and necessary even before it contains any records. The data is what exists within the structure. The structure is what makes the data intelligible as a system rather than merely a collection of disconnected pieces.
The same is true of algorithms.
An algorithm is not another piece of data sitting beside the other pieces of data. It is a relationship between inputs, operations, and outputs. It is abstract. You cannot point to an algorithm in the same way you can point to a photograph stored on a computer. Yet the algorithm has real consequences. It determines what the system does.
We do not consider this mysterious. We consider it computer science.
We routinely abstract away from particular pieces of information and ask what structure governs them. We change the data while retaining the schema. We change the inputs while retaining the algorithm. We construct virtual environments according to rules that are not themselves visible objects. We compare competing structures and determine which one better reproduces the behavior of the system.
This is so ordinary that we barely notice how extraordinary it is.
We have become capable of building entire virtual worlds by reasoning about structures that cannot be reduced to the individual pieces of data within them. Both the internet and AI are testaments of just how impactful computer science is.
And then something strange happens.
The moment we try to apply the same structural reasoning to reality itself, we are told that we have crossed into mysticism, theology, or spirituality.
Why is that?
Computer science asks:
What structure does this system follow?
Metaphysics asks:
What structure does reality follow?
Computer science asks:
What relationships make this system behave coherently?
Metaphysics asks:
What relationships make reality coherent at all?
Computer science asks:
What algorithm produces this behavior?
Metaphysics asks:
What underlying structure makes this behavior possible?
The questions are not identical in the topical aspect, but they share the same fundamental intellectual movement: moving beyond isolated observations and investigating the structure that organizes them.
Yet when the system is virtual, this is considered rigorous. When the system is reality itself, it is treated as nonsense.
That is the double standard of the modern mind.
Computer science applies structural reasoning to virtual realities and systems. Metaphysics applies structural reasoning to actual systems and reality.
The problem is not that we lack the intellectual tools. We use them constantly within computer science. The problem is that we have been culturally trained to discard them the moment we move beyond what can be directly observed. We use abstraction, inference, structural analysis, and relational reasoning to understand everything within virtual systems, but when those same methods are directed toward reality itself, we are told they no longer count as legitimate knowledge. The tools do not fail at the boundary of material observation. We have simply been taught to stop using them there.
The Empirical Double Standard
Empiricism is extraordinarily powerful when used for what it can actually do. Observation gives us information about the world. Measurement allows us to compare observations. Experiment allows us to test whether our expectations correspond to what happens.
The problem begins when empirical observation is quietly transformed from a method of investigating reality into the only legitimate form of knowledge about reality.
This produces a peculiar cultural contradiction. We are socially permitted to infer invisible structures in computing. We are permitted to reason about schemas, algorithms, relationships, abstractions, and logical rules. We are permitted to build entire virtual systems from structures that are not themselves pieces of observable data. But when we apply structural reasoning to reality itself, the structure is suddenly dismissed because it cannot be directly observed.
The contradiction becomes difficult to ignore. We have not discovered that structural reasoning is unreliable. We have demonstrated that it is extraordinarily powerful. We have the internet and AI to attest for that. We have simply created a boundary around reality and socially declared that the reasoning we use everywhere inside the system cannot be applied to reason about the system as a whole.
The computer is not outside reality. The internet is not outside reality. Software is not outside reality. Artificial intelligence is not outside reality. The programmer is not outside reality. Every virtual system we have ever created exists within reality.
So if we can legitimately investigate the structure of a virtual system that exists within reality, why should structural investigation become illegitimate when directed toward reality itself?
Reality is not less structured because it is more fundamental. If anything, the possibility that reality has a stable structure should be the most important structural question we can ask.
This is where metaphysics becomes much less mysterious. It is simply computer science, but applied to actual reality rather than virtual reality.
The Great Reorganization
This is where secularism has done something more consequential than simply separating religion from government. It has helped create a cultural reorganization of knowledge.
Classical worldviews that attempted to make claims about the ultimate structure of reality were increasingly relocated from metaphysics into theology. Once placed into the category of theology, they could be treated primarily as matters of scripture, tradition, denomination, interpretation, ritual, private faith, and competing religious identity.
They could remain safely contained. They could be debated endlessly. They could be placed in the intellectual timeout chair; preserved as traditions, debated as private beliefs, but rendered effectively inert in public discourse.
While the underlying question disappeared from public consciousness:
What pattern does everything that exists necessarily conform to?
That is the political significance of this shift. The problem is not that theology is a discipline. The problem is that theology has been allowed to replace metaphysics in the public imagination.
Metaphysics asks about being and reality. It asks what exists, what is fundamental, what depends upon what, and what makes coherence possible. Properly understood, it involves both ontology—the structure of what is—and epistemology—the means by which we can know that structure.
Theology is not equivalent to this.
Theology can preserve, interpret, and systematize religious traditions. It can debate texts, doctrines, histories, revelations, and interpretations. But when the schema that defines the object-subject relationship to understand the concept of truth is reduced to theological identity, the structural investigation of truth itself becomes obscured.
This is part of the broader imbalance produced by the modern prioritization of epistemology over ontology.
We become obsessed with asking:
How do we know?
while neglecting:
What is it that we are trying to know in the first place?
And then, having separated the knower from the model for truth, we declare the model unknowable.
The irony is that we routinely use ontology in practice, even when we rarely call it by name. Computing uses it. Medicine uses it. Engineering uses it. Database architecture uses it. Software design uses it. Ontology is embedded throughout modern industry, yet the underlying discipline remains largely invisible to the public. Epistemology is widely discussed as the study of how we know, while ontology—the study of what exists and how it is structured—is rarely given the same intellectual attention. We use ontology constantly; we simply have not been taught to recognize it.
Science itself depends upon distinctions concerning what kinds of things exist, how they relate, what counts as a system, and what properties remain invariant. We do not abolish ontology when we enter a laboratory. We simply stop talking about it rigorously.
That is why the modern opposition between epistemology and ontology is so misleading. We need both. We need to know what reality is and how we can know it.
Metaphysics is precisely where those questions meet. The epistemological question asks how we debug. The ontological question asks what system we are debugging.
Without ontology, epistemology has no object. Without epistemology, ontology has no method of investigation. The two belong together. Separating them and then declaring ontology unknowable is not intellectual neutrality. It is an imbalance.
Every Worldview Is a Structure
Once we understand this, another distinction becomes possible. Every worldview is a structure; a model/algorithm/schema. A religion is a structure. An ideology is a structure. A political philosophy is a structure. An economic system is a structure. A legal system is a structure. A government is a structure. Even a worldview that claims to have no worldview still contains assumptions about reality.
Every one of these systems tells us, explicitly or implicitly, what is fundamental, what depends upon what, what causes what, what human beings are, what constitutes knowledge, what is valuable, what is possible, and what follows from what.
In this sense, every worldview functions structurally like a data structure, schema, or algorithm.
The use cases differ tremendously, which is why one is culturally acceptable and the other is controversial. A worldview organizes information and determines how that information is interpreted and related.
The important question is therefore not:
“Do you have an algorithm?”
We all do. The important question is:
“Does the algorithm you are using correspond to the system you are operating within?”
That distinction is the foundation of objectivity. A programmer can write an algorithm, but the programmer does not get to determine whether the algorithm is compatible with the intended purpose simply by believing it is. The system produces behavior. If the algorithm fails to account for that behavior, the algorithm is defective.
Reality works the same way. We can construct ideologies. We can construct philosophies. We can construct economic models. We can construct political systems. We can construct religious interpretations, but constructing a structure does not make the structure objectively true.
We are subjects operating inside reality. Therefore there is always a difference between the structure we organize ourselves into and the structure reality actually follows.
Objectivity begins when we reverse the direction. Instead of demanding that reality conform to our structure, we demand that our structure conform to reality.
The Programmer and the Bug
This is where computer programming gives us an unusually useful model for metaphysics. Imagine a programmer discovers a defect. The expected result is not occurring. What does the programmer do?
The programmer steps thru the system as any regular user would to reproduce the problem. The behavior is observed. The location of the contradiction is identified. The programmer examines what happened immediately before the failure. The programmer inspects and pinpoints the code responsible for producing the behavior. Eventually, an assumption or relationship is identified that does not produce the expected result.
The code is then changed. The system is run again. The programmer checks whether the contradiction has actually disappeared.
This process is called debugging. Notice what the programmer does not normally do. The programmer does not say:
“The defect is correct. The user must adapt to the defect.”
The programmer does not redefine successful operation to mean that the program produced whatever the programmer happened to expect. The programmer recognizes that the greater reality expects a behavior and that the code must faithfully correspond to that behavior if the system is to work.
This provides a powerful analogy for metaphysics. Reality is the greater system we are operating within. Our worldview is the structure through which we interpret the system. It is inescapable, anytime we organize ourselves or become naturally organized, a worldview is constructed. Contradictions are defects in our model. The appropriate response is not necessarily to protect the model from contradiction. Perfection isn’t possible. The appropriate response, then, is to investigate the contradiction and become familiar in order to become proactive.
Some metaphysical systems do this. Others do not. Some approaches encounter a contradiction and ask:
“What is wrong with my structure?”
Others effectively answer:
“The contradiction is correct. Reality must be interpreted according to my structure.”
That is the difference between a worldview that is faithful to reality and one that demands reality become faithful to the worldview. The word faithful matters here. Faithfulness does not mean blind belief. It means fidelity. It means maintaining trust with the observed behavior of the system rather than manipulating the system to preserve one’s preferred interpretation.
A faithful programmer is faithful to the intended behavior of the program. A faithful scientist is faithful to the evidence. A faithful metaphysician should therefore be faithful to the greater reality outside of the context.
That is very different from protecting a belief regardless of contradiction.
Debugging Reality
There is an important limitation. We cannot open reality’s source code. There is no debugger window we can pull up and inspect. We cannot simply look behind reality and read its instructions.
But that does not mean we cannot investigate its structure. A programmer first infers what is happening inside a system by examining its behavior. We can do something analogous with reality. We can observe stable patterns. We can identify relationships. We can reproduce contradictions. We can then distinguish invariants from changing conditions. We can examine dependencies. We can compare competing models. We can ask whether a proposed structure remains coherent when applied universally. We can ask what everything else depends upon. We can ask what, if anything, does not depend upon something else.
We can rewrite a virtual world because the virtual world depends on us. In computer science, the relationship runs as: us → virtual reality. If the simulation doesn’t behave as we expect, we can open the source code, change the rules, and run it again until the system behaves as intended.
But reality is the opposite. We depend on reality; reality does not depend on us. The relationship runs as: greater reality → us → our models. We cannot open reality’s “source code” and rewrite it when reality disagrees with our expectations. When our model fails, we use metaphysics to analyze and change our model, whether that be an economic system, a governmental system, or any intersubjective system we build. When the way we have organized ourselves conflicts with reality, we change ourselves and our organization.
That’s the common principle between computer science and metaphysics: the dependent system must conform to the structure of what it depends upon. Computer science lets us see this principle in a controlled, artificial environment because we can stand outside the system and write its rules. Metaphysics asks what that same dependency looks like when we cannot stand outside reality or rewrite its source code.
Virtual reality conforms to us because we are its source. We conform to greater reality because we are downstream from it. The difference is the dimension in which the same structural relationship is being examined.
That is the metaphysical task. We are not inventing the schema. We are trying to discover it and continuously clarify its articulation, not design it.
The Six Conditions of Objectivity
This is where the structure of objectivity becomes important. It is the schema/model/algorithm of that articulation. The six conditions are not arbitrary criteria being imposed from outside the problem. The six conditions may not be exhaustive; there may be more to maintain its rigor. The six conditions emerge from asking what an objective reference would actually have to be in any given context. It doesn’t matter what the data or the material objects are. Given any context, can we relationally identify what are the subjects and what is the object in any given context without having to empirically observe it?
If we are looking for a reference point capable of grounding truth for everyone in a given situation, what would distinguish it from another object, person, convention, or consensus inside the system?
At minimum, we can identify six conditions.
Singularity: There must be one ultimate reference rather than competing ultimate standards.
Externality: The reference cannot simply be another dependent element within the system it is supposed to ground.
Independence: The reference cannot depend upon the subjects being evaluated.
Invariance: The reference cannot change according to preference.
Non-derivation: The ultimate reference cannot itself be derived from the system whose coherence it is supposed to explain.
Universality: The reference must apply across the entire domain rather than only to a particular group or perspective.
These conditions are not mystical. They are the structural characteristics we are already looking for whenever we call something objective. And this is important because these conditions provide a way to move from ordinary observations toward deeper ontological conclusions without beginning with a religious book, a religious identity, or a theological commitment.
We encounter singularity in our search for a coherent standard. We encounter externality when we recognize that the standard cannot simply be another object inside the set. We encounter independence when we recognize that the standard cannot depend upon the subjects it evaluates. We encounter invariance when we recognize that truth cannot change merely because our preferences change. We encounter non-derivation when we ask what the standard itself depends upon. We encounter universality when we discover that the same structure must apply regardless of who is observing it.
Our brains do it much quicker than we can articulate it.
The more consistently these conditions are followed, the closer we move toward the structure required for objective truth. And that is precisely why the investigation eventually becomes ontological.
The patterns we discover in the world point beyond individual data points toward the structure that makes those data points coherent in the first place.
Intersubjectivity Can Mimic Objectivity
This is also why intersubjectivity is so easy to confuse with objectivity. A society can create a shared standard. It can establish one reference point. It can apply that reference universally within the society. It can institutionalize it. It can enforce it. It can keep it relatively stable.
From inside the system, that standard can look objective, but there is one crucial difference. The standard was derived from the subjects.
The subjects created it. The subjects maintain it. The subjects can revise it. The reference therefore remains dependent upon the subjects.
That is intersubjectivity. It can be extremely useful. Intersubjectivity is necessary for language, law, commerce, institutions, measurement, and collective action. Reality supports our ability to construct intersubjective systems.
Human beings need shared references, but intersubjectivity is not objectivity. Consensus creates agreement, no matter how layered that agreement may be. Objectivity requires independence.
A million people can agree upon something false. A society can normalize a contradiction. A government can institutionalize an error. A majority can vote for a policy that reality eventually punishes.
Agreement demonstrates agreement. It does not, by itself, demonstrate correspondence with reality.
This is why consensus must stand on coherence, and intersubjectivity must stand on objectivity. Without that relationship, consensus becomes self-validating:
“We agree, therefore it is true.”
That is not objectivity. It is collective subjectivity—intersubjectivity.
God as the Ground of Objective Coherence
At this point, the word God becomes much less mysterious than modern discourse often makes it. The claim is not that God is a physical object hidden somewhere inside the universe. That would be a category error.
God is not another piece of data within the system. God is the ontological ground upon which the system’s coherence ultimately relies. Truth itself is not an object sitting somewhere waiting to be picked up and examined.
Truth is relational.
A proposition is true because it stands in the correct relation to reality. A measurement is meaningful because it corresponds to what is being measured. A conclusion is valid because the relationships connecting its premises and conclusion hold. Objectivity describes the structure by which those relations remain independent of our preferences.
So when we ask what truth ultimately relies upon, we are not looking for another observable object. We are looking for the ground of the relational structure itself.
God is the definition of what all truth ultimately relies upon.
God is not simply one true thing among other true things. God is the ontological ground of truth, coherence, and objectivity.
In this sense, God functions as the ultimate data structure of truth in ontology—not because God is literally a database, but because the analogy identifies the role of structure.
The data exists within a structure. The structure makes relationships intelligible. Reality exhibits relationships. Those relationships exhibit coherence. And the existence of objective coherence raises the question of what ultimately grounds it.
If coherence were merely subjective, then there would be no final distinction between a structure that corresponds to reality and one that merely corresponds to someone’s preference, but reality continually demonstrates otherwise.
If you jump from a building, gravity does not become imaginary because you personally reject it. The consequences are real. The relationship between the physical conditions and the resulting outcome is not created by your opinion. You can deny the coherence of the system. You cannot negotiate with its consequences.
That is precisely what objective coherence means. Reality exhibits coherence independently of our preferences, and if coherence is objective anywhere, then it cannot be treated as merely subjective everywhere. The very fact that we can discover stable relationships in reality gives us access to a structure by which coherence can be recognized elsewhere.
That is enormously important. It means truth is not simply whatever someone says it is. It means consensus is not the final authority. It means power cannot manufacture coherence.
It means reality constrains us, and because reality constrains us, the structure by which reality remains coherent can serve as a reference for evaluating every other structure we construct.
That is why objective coherence matters. Without it, truth collapses into preference. With it, truth becomes something we can seek.
Ontology Points Beyond Us
The key is therefore not to “grab God.” That misunderstands the claim. We should not expect the ultimate ground of reality to behave like an ordinary object within reality. The point is to recognize the pattern.
We observe reality. We identify stable relationships. We distinguish what changes from what remains invariant. We identify dependencies. We investigate what can be derived and what cannot. We ask whether our conclusions remain universal.
We stress-test our models. And through this process, we begin to recognize that objectivity itself has a structure. That structure points beyond the things we observe.
It points toward an ontological ground. The ground is not another observable object. It is what makes the entire relational structure intelligible.
This is why metaphysics does not require us to see God with our eyes before we can reason about God. We do not need to observe an algorithm as a physical object to know that a system follows one. We infer the structure from the behavior.
Likewise, we do not need to physically grasp the ground of coherence in order to investigate what kind of ground reality requires. The question is not:
“Can I see God?”
The deeper question is:
“What must be true of reality for truth, coherence, and objectivity to be possible at all? Why is it so reliable? Are we responsible for that stability or not?”
That is the ontological question. And once we ask it, the conversation changes
Religion as an Ontological Stress Test
This also changes the way we should approach religion. The common response to metaphysical discussion is often:
“Which God?”
But that question can be premature. It treats God as though we are choosing between competing objects. The deeper question is not which object exists, but which proposed pattern actually corresponds to reality.
That distinction is crucial: pattern, not object.
A religion’s definition of God is ultimately an attempt to describe the ground of reality; the underlying structure from which coherence, truth, dependence, order, and objectivity can be understood. God should therefore not be reduced to a theological personality profile, as though the question were simply which supernatural character one happens to believe in.
The definition should first be examined as an ontological structure. If you want to know which religion is true, the question is not simply which book you prefer, which tradition you inherited, which community you belong to, or which historical narrative you find compelling. Those questions matter, but they come later. Beneath them is a more fundamental question:
What does this religion claim is ultimately real—the ground that explains the phenomenon we call truth?
And then:
Does that proposed ground actually satisfy the conditions required for the objective truth we encounter every day?
This gives us a stress test.
Take the proposed ultimate structure and test it against claims we already accept as factual. Start with something as simple as:
1 + 1 = 2.
We already know the answer. The point is not to prove arithmetic. The point is to examine what makes the claim objectively true.
Now apply the six conditions of objectivity.
Singularity: Is there one determinate truth, or can competing truths occupy the same position?
Independence: Does the truth change because we vote for or against it?
Externality: Is the truth produced by our minds, or does it remain true regardless of whether we recognize it?
Invariance: Can we alter the claim and still preserve its truth?
Non-derivation: Is the truth dependent upon another claim within the same system, or does it point to a more fundamental ground?
Universality: Does the truth remain true regardless of who observes it, where they are, or what they believe?
These conditions are not merely philosophical decorations. They describe the structural properties we already rely upon when we distinguish truth from preference.
Then stress the proposed metaphysical structure further.
Does it explain the possibility of objective truth without making truth dependent upon human subjects? Does it preserve coherence when applied universally? Does it require exceptions to preserve itself? Does it contradict the very conditions it claims to explain? Does it remain coherent when its own principles are turned back upon itself?
The point is not to force reality into these six predetermined boxes. The point is to determine whether the proposed ultimate structure actually possesses the properties required of an objective ground. Does truth exhibit these six conditions reliably?
The key is to take any religion’s definition of God, or gods, and translate its claims into the underlying structure they imply: the algorithm by which that worldview says reality ultimately operates. Once the structure is made explicit, we can stress-test it against factual claims like the one we just examined. Does the proposed model reproduce the same pattern of truth we encounter in ordinary, everyday truth claims? Does it preserve the conditions that make a claim objectively true, or does it introduce exceptions, dependencies, or contradictions?
The strongest structure is the one that survives the greatest stress while requiring the fewest contradictions.
Across competing worldviews, like ideologies, philosophies and religions, the six conditions provide a concise structural description of what we already mean by objective truth: singularity, externality, independence, invariance, non-derivation, and universality. The question is therefore not which worldview has the most compelling story, but which proposed ultimate structure most faithfully reproduces the architecture of truth itself.
Metaphysics gives us a way to examine competing religious claims without beginning with theological tribalism. We can move from the patterns of truth we already rely upon toward the structure that could ultimately ground those patterns.
That is why this is not about choosing a team. It is not about choosing an identity. It is not about beginning with a book and declaring the book true. It is not even primarily about history.
The question is not merely “Which God do you believe in?” That is downstream.
The question is:
“What must ultimately be true for truth itself to be possible, and which proposed account of ultimate reality actually satisfies that structure?”
What is the structure of truth?
The religious claim about God is therefore not an arbitrary supernatural proposition floating above reality.
It is an attempt to identify the ultimate structure that makes reality coherent. God points back toward what truth ultimately is. That is why the question can be tested structurally.
Not with a laboratory instrument, because the object of investigation is not a laboratory object, but through coherence, necessity, dependence, universality, invariance, and the relationship between the ultimate reference and everything downstream from it.
This is metaphysics. It is complex, but it is not mysterious.
The Epistemological Distraction
One of the great intellectual tricks of modern discourse has been to make epistemology overshadow ontology.
The question “How can we know?” becomes so dominant that the prior question “What is there to know?” gets pushed into the background.
Then, because our knowledge is mediated by perception, language, cognition, measurement, and interpretation, reality itself becomes treated as inaccessible.
We become trapped studying the map while refusing to ask whether there is a territory.
But we already use ontology constantly. Computing uses it. Medicine uses it. Engineering uses it. Database architecture uses it. Software design uses it.
Science itself depends upon distinctions concerning what kinds of things exist, how they relate, what counts as a system, and what properties remain invariant.

The Metaphysical Consequence of Theology
When metaphysics is relocated into theology, something culturally significant happens. The ultimate structure of reality becomes associated with:
• private belief
• spiritual experience
• tradition
• scripture
• ritual
• religious identity
• competing denominations
• blind faith
The public imagination then learns to associate ultimate reality with mysticism.
The result is predictable.
People begin to think that asking about the ultimate structure of reality is equivalent to asking whether they personally “believe in God.” That is a category error.
The question is not initially whether you emotionally believe. The question is:
What structure does reality require for truth to be possible?
A programmer does not need to “believe” in an algorithm before testing whether it works. A scientist does not need to emotionally identify with a physical law before recognizing its implications. Likewise, metaphysical inquiry does not require blind belief. It requires structural investigation.
The irony is that by pushing metaphysics into theology, modern culture has not eliminated metaphysics. It has merely made people less conscious of the metaphysics they are already using.
Everyone still has assumptions about reality. Every government still has assumptions. Every ideology still has assumptions. Every economic system still has assumptions. Every moral framework still has assumptions. The only difference is that some people are no longer aware that they have them.
That is metaphysical illiteracy. And a population that cannot identify the structure governing its own assumptions is extremely easy to govern.
Governance Is an Algorithm
Every government is a structure. A legal system is a structure. A constitution is a structure. An economic system is a structure. A bureaucracy is a structure.
Each receives inputs and produces outputs. Each contains rules. Each establishes relationships. Each determines what follows from what.
In that sense, governance is an algorithm applied to human society. The important question is therefore not whether government uses an algorithm.
It does. The question is:
What algorithm is it using?
And more importantly:
Does that algorithm correspond to reality?
Democracy is not the problem. Democracy can be an extraordinarily useful mechanism for coordinating human preferences and preventing concentrated authority. But democracy cannot manufacture objective truth.
A vote can tell us what people want. It cannot tell us what reality permits. A majority can choose a law. It cannot vote away the consequences of violating reality. A majority can select an economic policy. It cannot force the economy to behave according to that policy if reality contradicts it. A majority can establish a social convention. It cannot make every underlying fact of existence conform to that convention.
Democracy therefore requires something that democracy itself cannot generate:
a standard against which its own decisions can be evaluated.
That standard cannot simply be consensus. Otherwise the system becomes circular. The subjects create the standard by which the subjects govern themselves. That is intersubjectivity, not objectivity.
From Consensus to Coherence
This is why democracy requires education that goes deeper than political literacy. Citizens need to understand the difference between:
“Everyone agrees.”
and
“This coheres with reality.”
They need to understand the difference between:
subjectivity and objectivity
consensus and coherence
intersubjectivity and independence
data and structure
model and reality
Without those distinctions, a democracy can become the blind leading the blind. The population may believe it is self-governing while remaining unaware of the structures determining what it considers possible. A crew may think they know their location in the ocean, but without an anchor to keep them grounded, they will collectively drift.
And whoever controls the structure of consensus, or controls the anchor, can influence the population without ever appearing to govern it directly.
The shadow puppet can move while the audience argues about the image. The captain can take the crew elsewhere while the crew argues about the anchor’s whereabouts.
True self-government therefore requires more than the ability to vote. It requires the ability to examine the structures within which voting occurs.
That means metaphysical literacy. And it means something even more important:
consensus must remain subordinate to coherence.
A democratic society should not merely ask, “What do we collectively want?” It should also ask:
“What does reality permit us to want without contradiction with the objective dependencies?”
That is the difference between blind participation and educated self-government.
The Danger of Metaphysical Illiteracy
This matters because human beings are not governed only by laws. They are governed by assumptions.
If a person cannot distinguish data from structure, they cannot recognize the assumptions organizing the data. If they cannot distinguish consensus from coherence, they can mistake agreement for truth. If they cannot distinguish intersubjectivity from objectivity, they can mistake social convention for reality. If they cannot distinguish a model from the system being modeled, they can become more loyal to their ideology than to reality.
At that point, self-government becomes much harder. People may believe they are making independent decisions while their understanding of reality has already been shaped by structures they never examined.
That is how manipulation becomes possible without overt coercion. The population does not need to be forced to accept a structure if it has been taught never to look for the structure in the first place.
Why This Matters for Human Rights
This matters because the question of human rights ultimately depends upon structure. We often speak about human rights as though they are self-evident moral intuitions.
But if we want to defend those rights under pressure, we need more than intuition. We need to be able to explain why one human being’s existence has the same fundamental standing as another’s.
If reality imposes the same basic structural conditions upon every human being, then equality has an objective dimension. The question becomes:
Can one person become intrinsically more human because a majority says so?
Can a government vote another person’s right to exist away?
Can a society make one group’s humanity objectively greater than another’s simply by constructing a different consensus?
If the answer is no, then the prohibition against doing so is not merely emotional. There is a structural reason.
The same underlying structure that allows us to speak meaningfully about truth can provide a basis for speaking meaningfully about fairness, equality, and human rights. But if people lack metaphysical literacy, they may be unable to articulate that reason.
Under pressure, the argument collapses into emotion. And emotion under pressure is often fear. Fear is easily manipulated. That makes metaphysical literacy a political issue.
The Three Responses to Reality
When reality contradicts our worldview, we have three basic choices.
We can deny the contradiction.
We can manipulate consensus until the contradiction becomes socially acceptable.
Or we can debug the worldview.
The first protects the model from reality. The second protects the model through social power. The third protects our relationship with reality.
Computer science already teaches us which approach works. When a program fails, we do not declare the failure to be correct because we are emotionally attached to the code. We investigate. We reproduce the defect. We trace the behavior. We locate the problem. We revise the structure. We run the system again. We check whether coherence with the greater system has been restored.
Why should reality receive less intellectual discipline than our computers?
The Forgotten Application of Computing
The people of the past were not necessarily foolish because they asked metaphysical questions. They were attempting to understand the structure of the system in which they lived. They did not have computers, but they had the same fundamental problem we have.
They were surrounded by data. They observed patterns. They noticed relationships. They asked what was fundamental. They asked what everything depended upon. They asked whether reality had an underlying order.
We did not invent structural reasoning when we invented computers. We built computers because structural reasoning already works.
Computer science demonstrates the power of abstraction, relationship, structure, and algorithm. The mistake is believing that these principles became legitimate only when we applied them to machines.
They were legitimate before computers existed. And they remain legitimate when the system under examination is reality itself.
Metaphysics is not an ancient alternative to computer science. It is the same fundamental intellectual impulse directed toward a different system.
Computer science asks us to discover the structure of virtual systems. Metaphysics asks us to discover the structure of the actual system.
The Global Constant
In computing, a global constant can provide a value that remains consistent throughout a system. A schema organizes information throughout a database. An underlying architecture allows different pieces of data to function together rather than becoming disconnected noise.
These are analogies, not literal descriptions of God. But they help clarify the problem.
If reality exhibits objective coherence, then something must distinguish a coherent relationship from a merely imagined one. The structure cannot be supplied entirely by the subjects if the structure is supposed to constrain those subjects. Otherwise, the distinction between truth and preference ultimately collapses.
If the coherence we rely upon to make sense of reality were merely subjective, then the consequences of reality would be subjective as well.
But they are not.
You can believe that gravity is imaginary. You can deny that a building will cause injury when you jump from it. Reality does not need your agreement. The outcome is not produced by consensus. The relationship between conditions and consequences exists independently of what anyone thinks.
That is objective coherence. And this is precisely why objective coherence matters. It gives us a standard that is not manufactured by the people using it.
It means reality constrains us. It means truth can be discovered rather than voted into existence. It means we can recognize coherence even when someone tells us that the coherent thing is false. And that is where the concept of God becomes ontologically significant.
God is the ontological ground of objective coherence. God is not another object inside the system. God is the ultimate reference upon which the system’s coherence relies.
Truth is relational, and objectivity describes the structure of those relations when they remain independent of the subjects.
God is therefore not merely a truth. God is the ultimate ground upon which truth depends. That means that in relation to what exists, God is singular, independent, universal, invariant, non-derivative, and external to everything that exists—the conditions that make the set of things that exist a universe rather than a multiverse.
The data structure is not something we can simply grab. We infer it through the stable behavior of the system. We identify the patterns. We test their universality. We examine their dependencies. We look for what remains invariant. We distinguish what is derived from what is not. And the structure that emerges points beyond what we can directly observe.
That is not mysticism.
It is the same movement of reasoning we already accept whenever we infer an underlying architecture from the behavior of a system.
Reality Is the Ultimate System
Metaphysics is not magic. It is not merely spiritual speculation. It is not an excuse to believe whatever we want or pick and choose.
At its best, metaphysics is the disciplined attempt to understand the structure of the system in which we exist. Computer science demonstrates what becomes possible when we take structure seriously.
It shows us that data alone is not enough. Information requires relationships. Relationships require structure. Structures produce behavior. Algorithms operate upon structures. And systems can be tested for coherence.
The same intellectual discipline can be turned toward reality. Every worldview is a structure. Every religion is a structure. Every ideology is a structure. Every government is a structure. Every legal and economic system is a structure. The question is whether these structures remain faithful to reality.
Consensus can coordinate us, but it cannot replace coherence. Intersubjectivity can unite us, but it cannot replace objectivity. Democracy can help us govern ourselves, but it cannot manufacture the reality within which we must govern.
Metaphysics can help us investigate the structure we are all already relying upon. And the question of religion can be approached without beginning with identity, tradition, or blind belief. It can begin with a much simpler question:
What pattern does reality consistently make truth apparent?
Then stress-test every proposed answer against a test set. Which survives contradiction? Which produces the strongest account of coherence? Which structure can justify truth without borrowing its authority from the very subjects it is supposed to judge?
The strongest structure should not win because the largest group votes for it. It should win because it survives the greatest stress.
That pattern is objectivity. It helps us recognize truth claims before we can observe them. And that is precisely what we already demand from our computers.
Computer scientists do not ask whether a program has enough followers. They ask whether it works. They do not ask whether a database’s schema is popular. They ask whether the structure coherently organizes the data. They do not ask whether an algorithm is culturally fashionable. They ask whether it produces the correct result.
Perhaps reality deserves the same intellectual honesty. We have spent centuries learning how to build systems. We have spent decades learning how to make those systems extraordinarily powerful. We can build virtual realities, intelligent machines, global networks, and computational worlds.
But we have not escaped the oldest question:
What is the structure of the reality in which all of these systems exist?
That question is metaphysics. It is not magic. It is not nonsense. It is not a private hobby for theologians. It is the investigation of what makes the entire system coherent.
Perhaps the greatest irony of the modern world is this:
We have become sophisticated enough to debug machines, yet culturally conditioned to defend the bugs in the worldview through which we understand reality.
The answer is not to abandon computing. It is to recognize what computing has already taught us. Structure matters. Coherence matters. The model must answer to the system. And reality—not consensus, not ideology, not identity, and not our preferences—must have the final say.
